Expired points are the most expensive DVC mistake. Here's a 90-day plan to make sure it never happens to you.
Every point block has an expiration date — typically the end of your use year for current-year points, or the end of your next use year for banked points. Disney doesn't warn you. Points disappear silently at midnight on the expiration day. Each expired point represents $15–$20 of lost vacation value.
Three months before your use year ends, log into the member site and review every unbooked point. Identify expiring points specifically. Decide: bank, use for a quick trip, transfer to another member, or rent through a service. Don't assume "I'll figure it out later" — last-minute decisions are how points get lost.
Your banking deadline is typically the last day of the 8th month of your use year — verify on your dashboard. After this date, expiring points can only be used (not banked). If you're past the deadline, find a 1–2 night trip that uses the points or list them on a rental service. Many rentals close within 30–45 days.
If you still have expiring points and can't take a personal trip, book any low-cost reservation at the cheapest available resort and date. A Sunday-Monday Saratoga Springs studio at 8–10 points can be canceled later (with points returning to a holding account usable within 60 days). Holding account points have limited use but they're not yet permanently lost.
If under 30 days and you can't use the points, list them on DVC Rental Store as a "confirmed reservation" — book a popular resort/dates and sell the booking. You'll recoup $14–$18/pt instead of zero. The rental community absorbs last-minute confirmed reservations quickly because they're priced below standard rates.
Set calendar reminders at 90, 60, and 30 days before each use year end. Add the dates to a shared calendar with anyone in your household who books trips. Most members who lose points don't realize the deadline approached until after it passed. Calendar discipline solves 95% of expired point situations before they happen.
