Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend draws runners from around the world. Here's how to plan DVC stays around the race events.
Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend runs the second weekend of January. Events include the 5K (Thursday), 10K (Friday), Half Marathon (Saturday), and Marathon (Sunday). The Dopey Challenge combines all four. Tens of thousands of runners plus families fill resorts and parks across this 5-day window.
Boulder Ridge Cabins at Wilderness Lodge are legendary among runners — the cabin layout fits multiple runners with gear, and the resort's location works for early-morning bus access. Bay Lake Tower offers easy walking to Magic Kingdom for post-race celebrations. Saratoga Springs is the value pick with deep availability. Pop Century and All-Star resorts (non-DVC) often book first for runners on a budget; DVC resorts fill quickly after.
Marathon Weekend dates are highly competitive at 11-month window for cabins and popular categories. Bus transportation to races (3 AM start times) is excellent from monorail and Skyliner resorts. If running multiple races, multi-night stays starting Wednesday and ending Monday accommodate the Dopey Challenge schedule.
Marathon Weekend usually falls within Adventure or Choice Season — point costs are reasonable. A 5-night Wednesday-Monday stay at a value resort runs 60–90 points. The bigger constraint is availability rather than point cost. Book early and have backup resorts ready.
Race buses run from every Disney resort starting around 3 AM. Lines can be long at the largest resorts. Some runners use Uber/Lyft to the start area for shorter waits. Family members can watch from designated cheer zones — typically near Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. Post-race finishers area food and beer is at ESPN Wide World of Sports — Disney provides return bus service.
The day after your final race is recovery day. Pool time, casual meals, and short park visits work better than full park days. DVC resorts with strong pools (Beach Club, Saratoga Springs, Kidani) shine on recovery day. Massage appointments at Senses Spa fill quickly during Marathon Weekend — book months ahead.
Many runner DVC members build their annual point pattern around Marathon Weekend: book the trip at 11 months, bank if needed, plan all other vacations around the post-marathon recovery period. The points needed for a 5-night Marathon Weekend stay are typically 70–120, well within a normal 150-point annual contract.
