Disney's waitlist fills 30–50% of requests. Here's how to maximize your chances and what to do while you wait.
When the room you want isn't available, you can add it to a waitlist with exact dates and room type. If another member cancels, Disney automatically books you and charges your points. Waitlists are first-come, first-served by waitlist add date. No notification before booking — you just see the reservation appear and points get deducted.
You can have multiple active waitlists. A common stack: target dates Sun-Fri waitlist + alternative dates Mon-Sat waitlist + third option Sun-Wed waitlist for a shorter stay. Each waitlist independently increases your booking probability. Some heavy waitlisters report 80%+ success rates with 3–4 overlapping waitlists.
While waitlisting, hold a backup reservation at a more available resort or room type for the same dates. If your waitlist clears, Disney books the new reservation and you cancel the backup. Backup reservations protect against the worst case (no waitlist clears) without locking you out of options.
Most waitlists clear in the 60–120 days before check-in, when other members are making travel decisions. Last-minute cancellations within 31 days create holding-account points that members try to use quickly, often by canceling longer trips for shorter ones — creating waitlist clears for the original longer stays.
Polynesian Bungalows, Beach Club Studios in summer, and Boulder Ridge Cabins for Marathon Weekend almost never clear from waitlists because home-resort members hold them tightly. For these, only home-resort ownership at 11 months reliably books. Save waitlist energy for trips with a realistic clear probability.
Once a waitlist is added, don't check it obsessively. Disney processes it automatically and emails you on clear. Use this time to plan the rest of your trip — dining reservations, park days, transportation. If the waitlist doesn't clear, your backup reservation still covers you. If it does clear, you have a great trip locked in.
