Disney lets members buy extra points for a single trip. Here's what they cost, when they're worth it, and better alternatives most members miss.
Disney allows members to purchase up to 24 additional points per use year per contract at a fixed rate — currently around $20–$22 per point. These are called One-Time Use Points (OTUP). They're applied to a single reservation, do not roll over, cannot be banked or borrowed, and disappear if unused.
OTUP at $21/pt is right at the market rate for renting points from members — sometimes slightly above, sometimes slightly below. The advantage of OTUP is convenience: a few clicks on the member site and you're booked. No third party, no contract, no rental risk. The disadvantage is the 24-point ceiling, which limits how much extra trip you can add.
You're short a small number of points to finish a stay (you have 60 but need 72 — buying 12 OTUP solves it). You want to extend a confirmed reservation by 1–2 nights. You need to upgrade from a Standard View to a Pool View room when only the upgraded category has availability. In each case, OTUP fixes a small gap without the hassle of a separate rental booking.
You're short 50+ points — at 24 points/contract maximum, OTUP can't solve it. You have flexibility to wait until your next use year — banking gives you free flexibility OTUP can't match. You're trying to fund an entire bonus trip — at $21/pt across two contracts you'd only get 48 points, which barely covers two nights at a low-point resort.
For shortfalls larger than 24 points, renting from another DVC member usually beats OTUP per point and has no ceiling. David's Vacation Club Rentals offers a confirmed-reservation marketplace. Member-to-member transfers (a one-time transaction per use year where points move from one membership to another) can also fill gaps for free between friends and family members.
OTUP must be requested before booking the reservation they'll apply to. Call DVC Member Services or use the member chat. They process the purchase, add the points to your account temporarily, and you book. Points charge to a credit card. Once the reservation is made, the points are committed — you cannot redirect them if you cancel.
