DVC Point Transfers Explained: What Disney's Rules Actually Say

A plain-English reading of Disney Vacation Club's published transfer rules, and how a member-to-member transfer differs from renting a reservation, renting points, or booking for a guest.

What this article covers (and what it doesn't)

This page summarises only what Disney Vacation Club's own published documents say about transferring points between members. It does not quote market prices, does not recommend paying or being paid for a transfer, and is not legal or tax advice. Transfer rules are set by Disney and can change; before acting, read the current Home Resort Rules and Regulations and confirm with Member Services.

Fact: what a transfer is

Disney's December 2024 revision of the Home Resort Rules defines a transfer as a Club Member assigning all or a portion of their Home Resort Vacation Points to another Club Member. Both sides must be Club Members — you cannot transfer points to someone who does not own DVC.

Fact: who is eligible

Per the same section, both the giving and receiving member must be owners of their ownership interests (not pending purchasers) and must be current on annual dues, loan payments where applicable, and other balances owed. Disney's documents list further restrictions; read Section 6 in full rather than relying on a summary.

Fact: resale owners and Membership Extras

The revised rules state that transferred points tied to an ownership interest not purchased directly from Disney may not be used for benefit programs that don't transfer with a resale purchase (such as Membership Extras). If you are receiving points from a resale owner, assume those points carry the same limits.

Fact: banked points

Disney's banking summary states that banked Vacation Points cannot be borrowed or transferred, and that banking transactions are final. If you plan to give points away, do it before banking them.

Four things that are not the same

1. Member-to-member point transfer — Disney moves points from one member's account to another member's account under the Home Resort Rules. Only members can receive them.

2. Booking a reservation for another guest — a member uses their own points to book a stay and names someone else as the guest. No points change accounts.

3. Renting a reservation — a member (or an intermediary acting for one) books with the member's points and a non-member pays for the resulting stay. Points never leave the owner's account.

4. Renting points through an intermediary — a third-party service arranges a stay booked on an owner's points. This is a private commercial arrangement governed by that service's terms, not a Disney transfer.

Mixing these up is the most common source of bad advice about transfers. If someone offers to sell you "transferred points" and you are not a member, what they are actually offering is option 3 or 4.

Opinion: when a transfer is worth considering

Our view, not Disney's: a transfer is most useful between members who already know each other — typically family members who own separately — where one member has points they cannot use and the other is a few points short of a stay. Because Disney's rules restrict what can be transferred and when, confirm eligibility with Member Services before either member changes existing reservations.

What we removed from the earlier version

An earlier version of this article quoted per-point transfer prices, fee and processing-time estimates, tax thresholds and booking-window claims we could not verify against Disney's current documents.
