Disney's Hawaii resort has some of the lowest point costs in the DVC system per square foot of luxury. Here's why Aulani is under-utilized by members and how to make the value work.
Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa is a AAA Four Diamond resort on the Ko Olina lagoon in West Oahu, offering 460 DVC villas across studios through 3-bedroom Grand Villas. Point costs are moderate. Cash rates are astronomical ($700–$1,200/night for equivalent rooms). And yet Aulani DVC inventory is often wide-open at 7 months — the exact opposite of what pure economics would predict. Aulani is where DVC value hides in plain sight.
Airfare — Hawaii is $600–$1,200+ per person from most US cities. Time — a 6-hour flight each way makes short trips impractical. Booking discomfort — many members simply "don't think Aulani" when planning DVC. Points allocation — members buying a Walt Disney World home resort don't naturally have Hawaii on the itinerary. The soft demand at 7 months makes Aulani a bargain for anyone willing to plan the flight.
Standard Studios in Adventure Season run 15–18 points per weeknight — nearly the same as Saratoga Springs at Walt Disney World, but for an oceanfront Four Diamond resort. Ocean View Studios add roughly 4 points per night. One-bedrooms sit at 30–36 points per weeknight in Adventure. Grand Villas at Aulani can be shockingly attainable in Adventure — 105–125 points per weeknight for a 3-bedroom that sleeps 12.
A cash rate for a Deluxe Studio at Aulani in Adventure Season runs approximately $650–$800/night in 2026. At 16 points/night and $13/pt all-in, DVC members are staying for roughly $210 in point-cost — a 65–75% discount versus cash. Almost no other DVC property produces that kind of cash-comparable value. Members who fly to Hawaii for a beach vacation anyway are leaving huge money on the table by not using their DVC points there.
Aulani has two sub-contracts on the resale market: standard Aulani dues (about $9.90/pt in 2026) and "subsidized" Aulani dues (about $7.15/pt) from an early direct offering. On a 150-point contract that's $412/year in dues savings — meaningful. Subsidized contracts trade at a premium of $15–$25/pt on resale but the dues savings recover the premium in 5–7 years. If you plan long-term Aulani ownership, actively hunt subsidized listings.
The Aulani resort is not a scaled-down Walt Disney World. It's a full Ko Olina resort experience with a Disney overlay: private snorkeling lagoon, tubing river, character breakfast at Makahiki, twice-nightly starlit hui gathering with island storytelling, and a substantial kids' club with Disney characters. It is unmistakably a Hawaii vacation with Disney warmth layered on — not a theme park hotel.
Fly into HNL (Honolulu) — Ko Olina is 25 miles west via H-1. Rent a car for the airport transfer and any off-property excursions; there is a bus but it's slow. Plan a minimum 5-night stay to amortize the flight — most Aulani vets say 7 nights is the sweet spot. Combine with 1–2 nights on a different island if you want to explore beyond Oahu; interisland flights from HNL are $80–$150 short-hops.
Members with a home resort other than Aulani who have never used Aulani — the 7-month availability is remarkably strong. Families with older kids who don't need daily park visits. Milestone-trip couples looking for a beach anniversary. Members with subsidized Aulani contracts trying to maximize their dues advantage. Grand Villa parties wanting the most affordable 3-bedroom DVC option in the entire portfolio.
