Old Key West: Is the Original DVC Resort Still Worth It?

DVC's first resort opened in 1991 with the largest studios in the system. Is OKW still a smart pick in 2026?

DVC's Original Resort

Old Key West opened in 1991 as DVC's first resort — originally called Disney's Vacation Club Resort. The Key West theming, pastel colors, and laid-back vibe set the tone for what DVC would become. The resort spans hundreds of acres along the Sassagoula River with multiple neighborhoods.

The Largest Studios in DVC

OKW Deluxe Studios are nearly 390 square feet — 40% larger than studios at most other DVC resorts. The layout includes a queen bed and a full-size sleeper sofa, plus a kitchenette and separate vanity area. For families who pack heavy or stay long, the extra space makes a meaningful difference.

One-Bedroom and Two-Bedroom Quality

One-bedroom villas at OKW are also among the largest in DVC at over 900 square feet. The kitchens are full-size, the living rooms are spacious, and the whirlpool tubs are oversized. The decor was refreshed in the 2018–2020 refurbishment, modernizing finishes while keeping the Key West theme intact.

The 2042 vs 2057 Question

OKW's original contracts expire in 2042. In 2007, Disney offered current owners an extension to 2057. Not all owners accepted — meaning the resale market has both 2042 and 2057 contracts at different per-point prices. A 2057 contract trades at a premium but offers 15 more years of use. Verify the expiration date before any purchase.

Point Cost Value

OKW point charts are among the lowest in DVC. Studios run 8–15 points/night and the room is huge. One-bedrooms run 15–28 points/night. For families needing villa-style space without premium point costs, OKW is one of the best long-term value picks.

Location and Transportation

Bus-only to parks. Some neighborhoods are far from the Hospitality House (main building) and the bus loop, which can mean long internal walks. Boat service to Disney Springs is available from one stop. The resort feels quiet and residential — many members appreciate the calm, others find it isolating.

Verdict in 2026

OKW remains an excellent value resort, especially for members who prioritize room size, low point costs, and a quiet atmosphere over location convenience. Buy a 2057 contract if available. Skip 2042 contracts unless the per-point price is dramatically lower, since shorter remaining years compress your amortization window.
