Five worked examples of the same 7-night trip booked as a straight stay at one resort versus a split stay across two — with actual point counts and the trade-offs each combo introduces.
A split stay divides a single trip across two (or occasionally three) DVC resorts to exploit the fact that different resorts have wildly different point costs on the same nights. Members who can accept a mid-trip room change often save 15–30% in points versus booking the same trip at a single resort. The trade-off is real: you pack twice, you commute between resorts, and you sometimes sleep in two different beds in one week. But the savings can be meaningful.
Straight stay: Polynesian Standard View Studio, Nov 8–15, 2026 = 122 points. Split stay: 3 nights Polynesian Standard View + 4 nights Bay Lake Tower Standard View = 52 + 60 = 112 points. Savings: 10 points (~8%). The Poly nights hit the front of the trip when families are excited about the theme; BLT delivers walkability for the back half. Small savings, but the split adds Magic Kingdom walking for half the week.
Straight stay: VGF Deluxe Studio, April 5–12, 2026 = 189 points. Split stay: 3 nights VGF + 4 nights Saratoga Springs Studio Preferred View = 81 + 78 = 159 points. Savings: 30 points (~16%). The VGF nights front-load the "wow" experience; Saratoga finishes the trip at bargain point cost while still on Disney property. Members who prioritize Magic Kingdom days can align VGF with those days.
Straight stay: Beach Club Villas Studio, Oct 3–10, 2026 (Food & Wine) = 138 points. Split stay: 4 nights Beach Club + 3 nights Boardwalk Villas Studio = 79 + 51 = 130 points. Savings: 8 points (~6%). Modest savings, but the added value is real: both resorts share the same International Gateway walking path, so the split doesn't create real distance. Room categories can also be optimized (Standard at Boardwalk, Garden View at Beach Club).
Straight stay: Aulani Ocean View Studio, Sept 6–13, 2026 = 133 points. Split stay: 4 nights Aulani Studio + 3 nights Aulani 1-Bedroom Standard View = 76 + 96 = 172 points. Trade-up example: this costs 39 more points but delivers three nights in a full 1-bedroom with real kitchen for a family. Not a savings play — a "spend points to upgrade" play. Aulani rewards longer stays that upgrade mid-trip.
Straight stay: Boulder Ridge Villas Studio, Nov 15–22, 2026 = 118 points. Split stay: 4 nights Boulder Ridge Studio + 3 nights Copper Creek Studio Cascade Cabin = 68 + 68 = 136 points. This split trades points for room variety within the same resort footprint — Boulder Ridge for lodge feel, Copper Creek Cascade Cabin for waterfront charm. Costs extra points but a memorable "two resorts in one" experience for members who love the Wilderness Lodge property.
First-time DVC users unfamiliar with any resort should not split — pick one and learn it. Trips with kids under 4 who need routine; the room change is disruptive. Trips shorter than 5 nights — the packing overhead exceeds the savings. Trips built around a specific home-resort 11-month advantage; you already have the best room, don't dilute it. Any trip where both spouses hate packing.
Book each segment as a separate reservation in the DVC member site. Coordinate the checkout day at resort A with the check-in day at resort B — the industry-standard "check out by 11, check in after 4" gap gives you a park morning. Use bell services to move luggage between resorts for free (Cast Members transfer luggage same-day to any Walt Disney World property). Both resorts see your Magic Bands, so park entry and dining charges continue uninterrupted.
